The Boone Service League, a community service organization of local women is accepting applications for the annual Boone Service League High School Scholarship(s). This year, Boone Service League will award $1000 in scholarship money to High Country residents of Ashe, Avery, and/or Watauga County who are Senior High School students planning to pursue undergraduate degrees beginning in the Fall of 2010.
Applications are due by Friday, March 26, 2010 and winners will be contacted during the week of April 26th. Winners and one guest are invited, but not required, to attend the Boone Service League’s annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction on May 15th at the Inn at Crestwood.
Students interested in applying should submit their information. Only on-line applications will be accepted. Applicants should select one of the two prompts listed below and prepare an essay not to exceed 500 words. We suggest applicants prepare their essay in a word processing program using the word count tool and spell check, and copy and paste the essay into the application. The content of your essay is our main concern, but we will also be looking at sentence structure, spelling and grammar. You will receive a confirmation within 48 hours of the receipt of your application. If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact Shannon Burroughs, Scholarship Committee chairman, directly at shannonburroughs@bellsouth.net.
Essay Prompts
Boone Service League members are committed to raising funds and using their talents to improve the quality of life for residents of the High Country. Unfortunately, there is never enough money or enough hands to take care of all the needs of which we are aware. We encourage thoughtful and prudent use of the resources entrusted to us by our donors, supporters, and members. We use scholarship funds to encourage young adults to pursue a life of service in their community.
- If you were a member of a service organization and
given $5,000 and a team of five members, how would you use these resources
to meet a need in the High Country?
- Describe one service activity in which you participated in the past 12 months. Were you a leader or a follower? How did you obtain the resources you needed and how did a person(s) benefit from you efforts? How were you changed as a result of your efforts?
The application deadline is March 26, 2010. Any questions can be directed to the address above or e-mailed to: shannonburroughs@bellsouth.net.
